The Brunel Goods Shed, near Stroud railway station is perhaps the last surviving Cotswold stone goods shed in the UK. It was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1845 and is a building of national significance. Stroud Preservation Trust is embarking on an ambitious and innovative project which plans to create a large scale exhibition venue for heritage and the arts in this wonderful building.
The Trust has previously carried out major repair works, at costs of over £100,000 in order to conserve the building and ensure its future. It is vital that this repair work is protected through the building being put to good use for the benefit of the community.
Preliminary plans have been developed in consultation with community groups, arts and heritage organisations, local authorities and local businesses. The historic goods shed will play an important part in the broader urban regeneration of the area, leading to further economic improvements for the town.
This architecturally important grade II* listed building, last used by British Rail in 1966, will become a vibrant dedicated space for use by the community. At present it is a semi-derelict building at risk.
